A Finland-inspired Curriculum

Our Finland-inspired curriculum explained: philosophy, stage-wise structure from Early Years to Senior, subjects, learning support, student life and outcomes.

The model

Curriculum Overview

A Finland-inspired model, thoughtfully adapted for Indian families.

Finland's education system is admired for a simple reason: its children do well and are happy. Its secret is not more hours or more tests; it is trust. Trust in teachers as professionals, trust in children as natural learners, and trust that play, rest and wellbeing are part of learning, not distractions from it.

At Roots, we pair that philosophy with strong academic foundations. Literacy, numeracy, science and languages are taught explicitly and well. Around them, phenomenon-based projects let children apply what they learn to real questions: how does our city get water, why do bees matter, what makes a bridge stand?

Assessment is continuous and low-stress. Teachers observe, give feedback and share progress with families each term. Formal examinations begin only when they are needed for board certification in Senior School.

Four pillars

  • Play & phenomenon-based learning

Themes that cross subjects and make learning meaningful.

  • Strong foundations

Explicit, well-sequenced teaching of reading, writing and maths.

  • Wellbeing & balance

Outdoor breaks between lessons and minimal homework in early grades.

  • Learner agency

Choice in projects and reflection on how, not just what, they learn.

Journey

Stage-wise Structure

Four stages, one continuous journey.

  1. Early Years children drawing together at a table01Ages 3–6

    Early Years

    Nursery – KG

Play is the work. Children build language, number sense, motor skills and friendships through guided play, stories, song and outdoor exploration.

    • Oral language and phonics through play
    • Early numeracy with hands-on materials
    • Self-care, routines and social skills
    • Daily outdoor and sensory learning

  3. A teacher helping a student at a computer03Ages 11–14

    Middle

    Grades 6 – 8

Subjects deepen, independence grows. Students run longer inquiry projects, join clubs and competitions, and begin to shape their own learning goals.

    • Disciplinary depth in STEM and humanities
    • Research, debate and presentation skills
    • Design thinking and robotics
    • Leadership through clubs and councils

  4. A teacher and students with building blocks in class04Ages 14–18

    Senior

    Grades 9 – 12

Board-aligned academics with the inquiry habits built over the years. Career guidance, electives and exam preparation that is rigorous without being anxious.

Pedagogy

Teaching Philosophy

How we teach matters as much as what we teach.

  • Play-based learning

In the early years, play is the most powerful way to learn language, number, empathy and self-control.

  • Inquiry-based learning

Students investigate real questions, gather evidence and present findings, building thinking skills that transfer.

  • Low-stress assessment

Continuous, formative feedback replaces high-stakes testing until board years. Progress is shared with families every term.

  • Teachers as professionals

Our teachers design their own lessons, collaborate weekly and receive ongoing training in Finnish pedagogy.

  • Outdoors every day

A 15-minute outdoor break between lessons and weekly outdoor learning, whatever the subject.

  • Minimal homework

Little or no homework in Primary; purposeful, time-boxed practice from Middle School onwards.
